District Cooling Systems

Energy Transfer Station (ETS)

The building's mechanical interface with a district cooling network, where plate heat exchangers transfer cooling from the district loop to the building's internal loop.

Where you'll find it in the UAE

A dedicated plant room in every building connected to district cooling across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Typically houses plate heat exchangers, control valves, strainers, pumps and the BTU meter.

Common faults

  • Plate heat exchanger fouling, which raises approach temperature and reduces delivered cooling
  • Blocked Y-strainers restricting flow
  • Control valve or actuator failure holding flow open and inflating consumption charges
  • BTU meter drift causing disputed billing
  • Poor delta-T across the building loop, the single most common ETS complaint

What servicing involves

ETS servicing covers plate heat exchanger cleaning or plate pack strip-down, strainer cleaning, control valve and actuator testing, pump checks, and BTU meter verification. Because district cooling is billed on consumption, an unattended ETS fault shows up directly on the invoice, which makes this one of the highest-return maintenance items in a Dubai tower.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on duty and environment, but in the UAE the dust load and near-continuous runtime mean intervals are shorter than manufacturer figures written for temperate climates. We advise based on the actual installation.

Yes. We work on this equipment across residential, commercial and industrial sites, and will tell you honestly if a job falls outside our scope.

Fouled heat-transfer surfaces, degraded seals and control faults account for most call-outs. Dust and humidity accelerate all three in this climate.

Yes. Readings, service reports and certificates are issued on completion, in the format facilities managers and inspectors expect.

Yes. Planned preventive schedules with agreed response times generally cost less than reactive call-outs on equipment of this kind.
