Lowering Your DEWA Bill Through AC Maintenance

Lowering Your DEWA Bill Through AC Maintenance

In most Dubai homes, air conditioning is the largest single item on the electricity bill, and by a wide margin during summer. That makes AC efficiency the main lever available for reducing what you pay, rather than a marginal one.

The items that make a real difference

Clean filters and coils. A system that can't move air freely or transfer heat efficiently runs longer to reach the same set point. Restricted airflow and fouled coils are the two biggest efficiency losses we find in the field, and both are maintenance items rather than equipment faults.

Sealed and insulated ductwork. Air cooled at some expense and then leaked into a ceiling void is money spent on nothing. On ducted systems in older properties this is often the largest single loss, and it's invisible from inside the room.

The thermostat set point. Every degree lower costs meaningfully more, because the system runs longer to hold it. Setting 24°C instead of 20°C is one of the few changes that costs nothing at all and shows up on the next bill.

Correct refrigerant charge. An undercharged system from a slow leak runs continuously and still struggles to cool, which is close to the worst case for consumption.

What matters less than people expect

Switching the AC off entirely when you go out for a couple of hours. For short absences in Dubai's heat, the system frequently uses more energy pulling the space back down from a heat-soaked state than it would have used maintaining a moderate temperature. Raising the set point while you're out is usually the better move than switching off, unless you'll be away for most of the day.

Closing vents in unused rooms. On ducted systems this can raise duct pressure and reduce overall efficiency rather than improving it. It's not the straightforward saving it appears to be.

A reasonable order to work through

Start with the changes: raise the set point a degree or two, clean the filters, make sure the outdoor unit isn't obstructed. Then get the coils cleaned and the system checked, since that's where the bulk of recoverable efficiency usually sits. Duct sealing and insulation come next, and are worth investigating specifically if some rooms never cool properly or you have unexplained ceiling condensation.
