Weak airflow is one of the most misdiagnosed complaints in Dubai, because it feels the same as poor cooling. The distinction matters: if the air coming out is cold but there is not much of it, you have an airflow problem, not a refrigerant one. Adding gas to an airflow problem achieves nothing and costs money.
1. Loaded filter
Obvious, and still the most common cause. In Dubai conditions a filter that a manufacturer rates for three months is frequently loaded in four to six weeks. Construction nearby, pets or an open-window habit shorten that further.
2. Blower wheel caked with film
This is the cause people almost never consider. The blower wheel has curved blades, and over years a greasy film of dust builds in the curve of each blade. That changes the blade profile and the wheel simply moves less air, even though it spins at full speed and sounds normal.
It is invisible without removing the panel, which is why a surface clean never addresses it. On a cassette or FCU that has run five years without a panel-off clean, this alone can account for a large share of the lost airflow.
3. Fouled evaporator coil
The coil is a fine mesh of fins. As dust bridges the gaps between them, the area for air to pass through shrinks. Airflow drops and, because less air crosses the coil, the coil gets colder, which can lead to freezing and a complete blockage.
4. Duct leakage and disconnection
On ducted systems, flexible duct that has come adrift above the ceiling is extremely common in Dubai, particularly after other trades have worked in the void. The air is still being moved, it is just being delivered into the ceiling instead of the room. The tell is one room noticeably weaker than the rest.
5. Closed or drifted dampers
Balancing dampers set at commissioning drift or are closed by someone chasing a different problem. Cheap to correct once identified, and worth checking before anything is dismantled.
6. Crushed flexible duct
Flexible duct kinked around a tight corner or compressed by something resting on it in the ceiling void can cut airflow to a room by a large margin. Again, the sign is a single room performing badly while the rest are fine.
How it should be diagnosed
Measure airflow at each outlet rather than assessing it by hand. Hand assessment cannot distinguish a 20% loss from a 50% loss, and the difference determines whether you are looking at a filter or a disconnected duct. Once measured, the weak outlets point directly at where to inspect.
