Why Your AC Is Not Cooling Properly in Dubai

Why Your AC Is Not Cooling Properly in Dubai

An air conditioner that switches on, makes all the usual noise, but never actually cools the room is one of the most common call-outs we get between May and September. The good news is that the cause is usually one of a short list, and a few of them you can rule out yourself before paying anyone to look at it.

Start with the three you can check yourself

A clogged filter. This is the single most common cause, and in Dubai it happens faster than most people expect. Dust and fine sand load a filter in weeks, not months. Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light clearly through it, that's your problem. Wash it, let it dry completely, and put it back.

The thermostat setting or mode. Worth thirty seconds of your time. Check the unit is on Cool rather than Fan, and that the set temperature is actually below the current room temperature. A unit stuck in fan mode blows air that feels almost cool at the vent but never brings the room down.

A blocked outdoor unit. The condenser outside needs airflow to dump heat. If it's boxed in, covered, or caked in dust and construction debris, it can't release heat and the whole system loses capacity. Clear at least half a metre of space around it.

The four that need a technician

Low refrigerant from a leak. If cooling has faded gradually over weeks, or the copper pipework at the outdoor unit is icing up, you're probably low on refrigerant. Important: refrigerant isn't consumed like fuel. If it's low, it has leaked, and topping it up without finding the leak means you'll be back to the same problem in a few weeks. The leak needs finding and repairing first.

Dirty evaporator or condenser coils. Distinct from the filter. Coils sit deeper in the system and accumulate a film that insulates them, so heat transfer drops off badly. A unit with heavily fouled coils can lose a large share of its effective capacity while appearing to run perfectly normally.

A failing compressor. If the outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin, or it trips the breaker shortly after starting, the compressor or its capacitor is a likely suspect. This is not a DIY repair.

Duct leakage or blockage. On ducted and central systems, cooled air can escape into the ceiling void through failed joints or missing insulation before it ever reaches the room. If one room cools fine and another never does, suspect the ductwork rather than the unit.

The pattern tells you a lot

Before you call anyone, notice how it failed. A sudden stop usually points to an electrical fault or a component failure. A slow fade over weeks points to refrigerant loss or dirt build-up. Uneven cooling between rooms points to ductwork or airflow balance, not the unit itself. Telling a technician which of those three it is will save time on the diagnosis.
