Indoor Air Quality

Particulate Matter: PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10

Dubai Municipality sets PM2.5 at 35 µg/m³ over 24 hours and PM10 at 150 µg/m³ over 24 hours, with an 8-hour PM10 figure of 100 µg/m³. WHO’s health-based targets are far lower. Both matter, for different reasons.

Why it matters

Particulate matter is microscopic solid and liquid material suspended in air, classified by diameter in micrometres. In Dubai, construction dust, vehicle emissions and regional shamal winds push outdoor particulate loads well above what temperate-climate buildings are designed to filter.

The three sizes behave differently inside the body. PM10 is trapped largely in the nose and throat. PM2.5 reaches the deep lung. PM1.0 crosses into the bloodstream. That is why a monitor reporting all three is more useful than one reporting a single figure.

World standards

  • PM2.5: annual mean below 5 µg/m³, 24-hour mean below 15 µg/m³
  • PM10: annual mean below 15 µg/m³, 24-hour mean below 45 µg/m³

UAE standards

  • PM2.5: 35 µg/m³ over 24 hours, 100 µg/m³ over 1 hour
  • PM10: 150 µg/m³ over 24 hours, 100 µg/m³ over 8 hours
  • These apply to both new and existing buildings

Note the gap between the two sets of figures. The Dubai Municipality ceilings are enforceable compliance limits. The WHO figures are health-based targets. Meeting DM is the legal floor, not the healthy optimum.

Widely repeated online: “suspended particulates below 150 µg/m³ over an 8-hour window”. That mixes two rows of the table. 150 µg/m³ is the 24-hour figure; the 8-hour figure is 100 µg/m³.

Impact on health

Fine particulate triggers asthma attacks, aggravates chronic bronchitis and measurably reduces lung function in children. Long-term exposure is associated with cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation and increased respiratory infection risk.

How to reduce it

  • Keep windows and balcony doors shut during shamal conditions, and run the AC on recirculation rather than fresh-air intake while dust persists
  • Fit pleated filters at MERV 8 or better and change them monthly through summer. Dubai’s dust load shortens filter life well below manufacturer ratings written for European conditions
  • Have supply and return ducts professionally cleaned annually
  • Check AHU drain pans monthly, which is the interval DM specifies for drain trays

If a reading stays high with windows closed and filters new, the fault is usually a leaking duct or an unsealed filter frame drawing unfiltered air past the filter, not the filter itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dubai Municipality sets 35 µg/m³ as a 24-hour average and 100 µg/m³ over 1 hour. WHO recommends a far lower 15 µg/m³ over 24 hours as a health-based target. Passing the DM limit means you are compliant, not that the air is optimal.

Monthly through summer for a pleated MERV 8 filter in most Dubai properties. Manufacturer intervals are written for temperate dust loads and are optimistic here. Hold the filter to a light: if you cannot see through it, it went past its useful life some time ago.

Usually a leaking return duct, an unsealed filter frame letting air bypass the filter, or a fresh-air intake sited next to a car park or construction site. A new filter in a leaking system does very little.

It reduces the reservoir of settled dust that gets re-entrained every time the system starts. It does not fix a leaking duct, a bypassing filter or a badly placed intake, which is why we inspect before quoting rather than selling a clean by default.

The number is the particle diameter in micrometres. PM10 is mostly caught in the nose and throat, PM2.5 reaches the deep lung, and PM1.0 can cross into the bloodstream. Smaller means less visible and more consequential.
