Smell is a surprisingly good diagnostic. Different causes produce distinctly different odours, and unlike most AC faults, this is one you notice immediately.
Musty or damp, strongest when the AC first starts
By far the most common complaint we get in Dubai. It's microbial growth on a damp evaporator coil, in the drain pan, or inside the ductwork. Dubai's humidity means the interior of an AC system spends much of the year damp, which is ideal for mould and bacteria. The smell is strongest at start-up because the first rush of air pushes accumulated odour out through the vents.
Air fresheners and filter sprays mask it for a day or two. The actual fix is cleaning the coil, drain pan and ducts, followed by an anti-bacterial treatment of the system interior.
Sour or "dirty socks"
Same underlying cause as musty, generally further along. It indicates a well-established biofilm rather than surface growth, and usually means the duct network needs proper mechanical cleaning rather than a surface wipe-down.
Burning or hot electrical
Switch the system off. A burning smell means overheating: a motor, wiring, or the compressor. This is the one smell on this list that warrants stopping immediately rather than scheduling a visit for next week.
Chemical or sweet, slightly like ether
Possible refrigerant leak. Ventilate the room, switch the unit off, and have it checked. Refrigerant leaks are also why the unit has probably been cooling poorly.
Sewage or drain-like
Usually not the AC at all. It's typically a dry or faulty plumbing trap near an air intake, with the AC simply distributing the smell around the property. Worth checking floor drains and unused bathrooms before blaming the air conditioning.
Why this matters beyond comfort
A musty AC smell means you're breathing whatever is growing inside the system, all day. For most people that's unpleasant. For anyone in the house with asthma, allergies or a respiratory condition, it's a genuine trigger, and it's the reason we treat persistent odour complaints as an air-quality issue rather than a cosmetic one.
